Mass transit collection, 1860-1981.

This artificial collection consists of material collected by the Evening Bulletin during its years of operation. The Evening Bulletin maintained an extensive reference library for its own use. After its closing, the collection was given to the Temple University Libraries, and subsequently transfered to the Urban Archives. Especially noteworthy is the collection relating to mass transit operations in the Philadelphia area. Due to this concentration, the mass transit material was segregated by the Urban Archives staff into this collection. Records are divided into three series including: Operators series, consisting of records generated by Philadelphia's early transit "underliers," the Philadelphia Transit Company, the Philadelphia Transportation Company, and the Southern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority; Public and private agencies series consisting of records generated by Philadelphia city agencies ( City Planning Commission, City Solicitor, the Departments of City Transit, Public Property, Public Safety, and the Select and Common Councils),and some miscellaneous files of the International Railway Company, Mitten Bank Securities Corporation, Mitten Management, and the Pennsylvania Public Service Commission; Finally the subject files series includes files about Philadelphia's Broad Street Subway, general transit histories, opinions on city transit, and the early underlying transportation companies.
